How to Hire a Contractor -- Chapter 2 Making a list and expanding on it.

Okay so you want to renovate a room, build a deck or something along those lines, let us get started.  First you need to figure out what you want to do, it is that simple.  Let us say for example you want to give your family room a make-over.  This is where the check list starts, basically start by sitting back and deciding what you want to change starting from the floor up.
Do you want a new floor, paint, new trim, and/or a new fireplace mantel?  The check list is very important it is going to help you through the entire process of the job.  It will help you get organized and be able to help you get the answers you need without forgetting the important parts.

You are going to take this list and learn about all the steps you need to take to finish the project.  It will also help in breaking down the job in order to help with figuring out how much work there is, what each job entails, how much the materials are going to cost and will help you to figure out how much of a budget you need roughly.  Make several copies of the list so you don’t lose them and keep a master copy filed away somewhere safe.

We are going with the example of renovating a family room with a fireplace.  So the first thing that we would do is figure out what we want gone.  If we want a new mantel, the old one needs to be taken away.  If we want to go from a carpeted floor to a wood floor in which case I would change the baseboard and casings (the moulding that is around the doors and windows) in the room (will explain my reasoning later).  The room would need a new paint job and since we are painting why not take down the old face bricks of the wall and put tile around the fireplace and hearth.  To finish the room put up some crown moulding to enhance the ceiling.
The list should look something like this:

                                                                        Family room reno.
1.      Replace carpet with wood
2.      New baseboards and casing
3.      Remove old brick face
4.      New mantel
5.      Install crown moulding
6.      Paint

Well now we have the list it is time to learn what to do with it.  The first thing is to learn what should be started with and what is the last thing one does, keep in mind this is renovation and there are numerous ways of doing things.  There is a saying “You can ask 10 carpenters on how to make a wall and you will get 100 different ways.”  And each of those ways will be just as right as the other one.  So the way I approach thing is always build up from the ground to the ceiling.  So with that in mind we will now expand the list for the job.

The first glance at the job shows there are some things that need to be removed and thrown out, like the old carpet, bricks and trim (baseboard and casing).  So that tells us we are probably going to the dump (landfill) or have to get a bin.  Now the next step is to do the floor, the tiled hearth and wood floor.  After that would be the fireplace mantel than the casing.  The baseboard would be next and then the crown moulding.  After all that it is time to paint.

Expanded family room reno list

                                           1.      Remove bricks and carpet and dispose of waste
                                           2.      Put down wood floor first as to not damage tile hearth
                                           3.      Install tile hearth
                                           4.      Build or install the fireplace mantel
                                           5.      Install tile around fireplace
                                           6.      Install all casing around the doors and windows
                                           7.      Install baseboard
                                           8.      Install crown moulding
                                           9.      Paint

As you see as we go along the list will get longer and longer.  So know we go the list we know can learn how to work with it, which will be our next chapter.
